WhimAway Privacy Policy
WhimAway rebuilds your travel history from the photos on your phone. The short version: your photos, locations and trips stay on your phone. We do not run a server for the app, we have no account system, and we collect nothing about you.
What the app reads
- Your photo library, only after you allow it. WhimAway reads the date, time and location saved in each photo, and the photo itself to show it and to search it. This happens on your phone.
- Files you choose, such as a Google Maps Timeline export or a Google Photos (Takeout) export. The app reads the file you pick, on your phone.
- What you add: your answers to review questions, trips you add by hand, notes, and your settings.
Where it stays
Your history, the work of grouping photos into trips and countries, place names (data bundled inside the app), and photo search (Apple's Vision technology running on your phone) all run on your phone. The results are stored in the app's private storage on your phone. We never receive them.
WhimAway has no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. It contains no third-party analytics or advertising code.
The exceptions, in plain words
Four things involve something outside the app. None of them sends your data to us.
- Detailed maps from Apple (optional, off by default). If you turn this on, trip maps are drawn by Apple Maps. To do that your phone asks Apple for map images of the area you are looking at, so Apple can see which map areas you view. This is governed by Apple's privacy policy. Your photos and trips are not sent. You can switch back to the offline map at any time. If you never turn it on, no map request is made.
- Purchases. The one-time unlock is bought through the App Store. Apple processes the payment and tells the app whether the purchase is valid. We receive no payment details and no information about who you are.
- What you share or export. If you use the share sheet, save a CSV, create a travel book PDF, send a postcard or share card, or save a backup file, that file goes where you send it. Those files can contain places, dates, photos and notes. Check the destination before you send.
- Files you import. When you import a Google Maps Timeline or Google Photos export, the app reads the file you chose. It does not contact Google.
If you use iCloud Photos, your photos are synced by Apple, not by WhimAway. WhimAway only reads the photos that are on your phone and does not download originals from iCloud.
This website
This website is served by Cloudflare. To deliver a page, Cloudflare handles the request your browser sends, including its IP address, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. We add no analytics, cookies or trackers to these pages.
What we collect
Nothing. We do not collect, store, sell or share personal information, because we never receive it.
Children
WhimAway is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children. Because the app collects nothing, there is nothing to delete from our side.
Deleting your data
- Delete the app and its stored history, notes and settings are removed from your phone.
- Backups you saved are ordinary files that you control, in Files, iCloud Drive or wherever you put them. Delete them yourself. A backup file is not encrypted and contains precise locations and notes, so keep it somewhere you trust.
- Files you exported or shared are copies outside the app. WhimAway cannot recall them.
- Your photos are never changed or deleted by the app.
Changes
If this policy changes, the effective date above changes and the new version replaces this page. If the app ever starts sending data off your phone, this page will say so before that release.
